I remember watching Gladiator for the first time years after its release, sometime in 2005 on tv and wondering how I could have let such a beautiful poignant movie slip by me for so long. I recently watched it again and fell in love with it. I could watch this movie again and again, though I know that the movie ends on a high emotional note and that it is laced with several kleenex tearjerker moments.
The video is of the movie theme - ' Now we are free'(Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard) I googled the lyrics and apparently the lyrics are in a fictitious language though some people argue that it is in Gaelic, Hebrew ,Latin or a Spanish dialect. Someone even said that the lyrics are in an old North African language of the Moors. I myself thought that the lyrics were in Hebrew because of the word 'Shalom ' which I believe means 'free'.
The haunting notes and the transportive quality of Lisa's voice sure do not contribute towards demystifying this song.
It makes me think of the number of languages out there, each one of them, a treaure trove in itself, waiting to be discovered and also of the languages that have been lost to us over generations as we globally gravitate towards one spoken language.
Irrespective of the language this song is written in, I think its one of the better compostions to come out of the Hollywood stable in contemporary times.
